At the start of the month, I visited Mill Street Pub & Kitchen in Oakham for the first time. I've heard nothing but great things about the restaurant itself and when they invited me down to try out their menu for myself, I was excited to do so.
I'd visited the building many, many times before it became Mill Street Pub & Kitchen and actually had no idea it was located where it was until I visited.
Although you might be swayed a little by the name, to think it's more of a 'pub', it's actually an extremely stylish bar, restaurant, venue and hotel. With envious decor throughout Mill St Pub & Kitchen is one of the most well decorated and uniquely placed to wine and dine in the area.
With many rooms and levels to the building, it's a really nice place to visit for food, a drink, a coffee, meeting etc and there is public, private and outdoor seating with something for everyone.
Upon entrance, you're faced with an amazing bar full of local, traditional and unique beverages to choose from, with a fabulous selection of unusual spirits and types of gin/vodka you've maybe never heard of! Including a non-alcoholic gin, which smelt of herbs and deliciousness!
When we arrived, we were greeted by Mill St's manager, Jan Nova (a very cool guy, with a very cool hairstyle!) who kindly gave me a tour of the establishment and all it's exciting hidden areas, each impeccably designed with colours and unique lighting.
Jan Nova also explains about Mill St Kitchen's 'Pub Club' which sounds amazing and would make the perfect gift for a foodie. The 'Pub Club' consists of an exclusive club of ten members who dine with Jan Nova as their host, for an evening of many courses once a month to a different theme every time.
I was also told about their speciality cocktails and took to our a table a Rhubarb-tini - Delicious!
We dined in the room which overlooked the garden, decorated with light and floral colours and were greeted by very polite and helpful staff, who were kind enough to read out the specials board to us, which was a lovely touch.
The food menu itself allows something for everyone, even the vegetarians like myself! The starters sections particularly excited me with a huge selection of options including mezze boards, scotch eggs and much more.
It features sections of salads, sandwiches, burgers, mains, steaks and sides! The only thing I think the menu was missing was a vegan pasta dish, which I always like to see.
We began with 'Homemade Artisan Breads' and a 'Warm Garlic & Rosemary Baguette', which I'm glad we did. The garlic baguette arrived warm and moist, with the smell of garlic and rosemary together which couldn't possibly disappoint.
The artisan breads were so different with a tomato loaf which was particularly lovely, dipped with Mrs Middleton's Rapeseed Oil.
For main, I chose the 'Garden Pea, Broad Bean Risotto' and opted for the 'no feta' option. Priced at £10.00 I thought was reasonably priced for the ample portion. It was very tasty however, I could have done without the broad beans and would've like to see them replaced with something else with a little more colour.
My partner chose the '8oz Dry-aged Ribeye Steak' for £21.50, however sadly they had run out. So, decided to go for the '7oz Dry-aged Fillet Steak' for £28.00.
With a great portion of steak, salad and chips with a homemade sauce of your choice. All presented beautifully with care a precision. However, for £28.00 the steak was slightly over than the medium/rare requirements my partner stated, but extremely delicious.
I would highly recommend a visit to Mill Street Pub & Kitchen and believe it is a real gem to Oakham and Rutland, with its large menu, amazing drink selection and not to mention the menu of stunning, traditional desserts.
My favourite thing about Mill Street Pub & Kitchen is definitely the decoration and amazing, polite and welcoming staff who's kind attention is received throughout your visit.
But not only the food and decor that Mill Street Kitchen offers is pretty awesome, the bedroom that Jan Nova kindly showed us are stunning! Should you be visiting Rutland yourself, or have a friend or family member wanting to stay somewhere stylish and local to the town centre, I would highly recommend Mill Street Pub & Kitchen's services to them.
As well as the rooms, Mill St is also a venue. Hidden bellow the restaurant floor is a red brick arched room which featured comedy nights and more, also available to hire with its own bar too - genius!
It's no doubt that your visit to Mill Street Kitchen will be one you remember and one you can be sure you'll visit again. I'd like to thank Mill Street Pub & Kitchen for inviting me and my partner now to try their amazing menu and see their extremely beautiful building and establishment, it was an enjoyment from the start.
