My Story | I'm Walking 100 Miles in May for Breast Cancer Now

I’m Charlie, I’m 30 and this May, I’ll be walking 100 miles to raise money for Breast Cancer Now.

Did you know a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 10 minutes in the UK? 🫶🏻

For two years, I’ve lived with chronic back pain—originally dismissed as ‘post-partum adjustment’. I tried everything: physio, pain relief, wearing a TENS machine daily… It was more painful than childbirth. Simple tasks became overwhelming, my self-esteem dropped and my mobility decreased—making it agony to even hold my baby. All while trying to run a business.

Eventually, BUPA referred me for an MRI, which revealed arthritis in my lower spine. Since then, I’ve had two back procedures and spent 10 months in weekly physio and acupuncture, determined to avoid a third, more invasive surgery. Slowly but surely, I’ve been rebuilding strength and confidence—with the end goal of holding my toddler, Stanley without pain.

Then in early 2025, I noticed ongoing abnormalities in my breast. With my Mum diagnosed in 2019 and my Nana passing away from breast cancer in 2016, I’d always promised to take symptoms seriously. I was referred to Peterborough Breast Clinic and thankfully, everything came back clear. But the care I received—and the fear in waiting—left a lasting impression.

So this May, I’m taking on 100 Miles in May—for my fitness, for my confidence. For my Mum. For my Nana. For the vital research that helps detect and treat breast cancer sooner and more effectively.

Eight months ago, I couldn’t have imagined taking on a challenge like this. But here I am. Feeling stronger. Grateful and ready.
