A Visit to: The Best Family-Friendly Carvery in a Village Pub near Rutland

rI think I’ve found the best carvery near Rutland and it’s only £15.50 per person.
Tucked away in the beautiful village of Bulwick, just outside Rutland near Stamford and Corby, The Queens Head is one of those pubs that instantly feels nostalgic the moment you walk through the door.
This is actually a pub I’ve visited since childhood, so returning now with Stanley felt incredibly special. Sitting in the courtyard garden watching Stanley play in the same place we used to run around years ago felt like one of those lovely full-circle moments.
And now? It’s become the place around to go for a proper carvery.
Unlike most pubs that only serve roasts on Sundays, their popular carvery is available twice a week, on Wednesday evenings and all day Sunday, making it perfect if you're craving a mid-week roast.
The portions are epic, packed with all the classic carvery favourites, crispy roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and plenty of gravy.
Meat eaters can choose from a selection of roast meats, while vegetarians and vegans are really well catered for too. I have to mention the nut roast because it was delicious.
But if you're not in the carvery mood, don't panic, there's a menu full of alternatives. There’s also a mini carvery for children, plus a separate children's menu and other dishes available if a roast isn't their thing. It's such a family-friendly menu!
The pub itself is beautiful, a cosy 16th-century coaching inn bursting with character, it's dog-friendly too, and run by the Haynes family who have almost 30 years of hospitality experience. Their focus is homemade food, traditional pub classics and a warm welcome, and after our visit, it has exactly that.
The outdoor dining area and courtyard garden are absolutely lovely. It was one of my favourite parts of the visit, and it's easy to see why so many families choose to spend an afternoon here. The pub has also built a reputation for its outdoor dining, friendly atmosphere and regular foodie events, alongside the famous carvery.
The drinks were also really reasonably priced, and if you're somebody who loves a dessert, prepare yourself because the pudding menu is one you'll love.
This genuinely felt like the most nostalgic Sunday afternoon. Great food, children playing outside, sunshine in the courtyard garden and that cosy village pub atmosphere you just can't fake.
It's easy to see why this one has become so popular, so I'd definitely recommend booking ahead if you're planning to visit.
